MESSAGE FROM MR. MEDWED

Marc Picture 2011Dear Parents,

So the weather finally seems to be appropriate for the time of year!  While it is getting colder outside, things are definitely staying warm inside!

In my blog post this week, I shared thoughts and reflections on a conference I attended recently.  One of the sessions I talked about was on social networking and community.  While walking around the school this week, I happened upon a lovely example of social networking and building community KSA style.  As I was walking down the hall near the third grade classrooms, the smell of pizza was in the air.  Not unusual since it was pizza day for lunch; what was unusual was the aroma in that part of the building, as lunch is eaten in the gym.

As I turned the corner to see what was going on, imagine my delight when I saw all of the fourth grade girls sitting on the floor in the third grade classroom with one of their teachers from last year, having lunch together.  This relationship between students and their teacher is not unusual--in fact is the norm in our school, as relationships between teachers and students have a profound impact on everyone.  What was unique here was that it was all of the girls--even those who only came to the school this year.  What a wonderful testament to our students and their current teachers for building such a strong classroom community where each child feels as though she has been here since the beginning.

How special is our community!

Shabbat Shalom!

Important Chaijinks Announcement!

Kehillah Schechter Academy

We're very pleased to announce that we will be honoring Susan and Stuart Salzberg

at this year's Chaijinks on Sunday, March 18.

Susan and Stu Salzberg

Susan and Stuart have been a vibrant part of the fabric of our community from our school's early days throughout its evolution over the years. They have continued to demonstrate their commitment and support as our school entered this next phase of its journey as Kehillah Schechter Academy.

Proud parents of two KSA alumni and one current student, both Susan and Stuart have taken active leadership roles in a variety of capacities, tirelessly volunteering and fundraising within the extended Jewish community as well as at our school. The Salzbergs have always been and continue to be actively involved with KSA as demonstrated by the exceptional time and energy they devote as well as the financial support they have invested in the Annual and Capital Campaigns.

Please save the date - a formal invitation will follow.

Note: Chaijinks is an annual event and Kehillah Schechter Academy's largest fundraising initiative. In addition to being a lot of fun, it is also a wonderful way for people in the greater community to get to know KSA. Parents, grandparents, alumni families, community members and businesses demonstrate their support of our school by purchasing ads in the tribute journal.

Business Office Update II

Kehillah Schechter Academy

November 14, 2011

Dear Kehillah Schechter Academy Parents,

Earlier today, I wrote to you about a staffing change in our business office. As you know, KSA families continue to endure tough economic times which, in turn, generates a negative impact for the school. In this climate, the business office plays an ever more critical role in the day-to-day administration as well as strategic planning for the future economic health of the school. As the head of the business office, the newly created position of Director of Finance and Operations is a key strategic position for our school, and we have worked diligently to find the right person for our school at this juncture.

It is my pleasure, to welcome Russell Lavoie as our new Director of Finance and Operations.  Russ will be joining our team as of tomorrow. Russ was most recently the CFO of a high tech company for 19 years and has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience in dealing with financial infrastructure, planning and customer relations. We are excited to have Russ bring his skills to our school and we look forward to having him get to know us.

Russ will work closely with Sandy Spector and Ellen Powell, each of whom will continue in their current roles, providing continuity for our office as we undergo this transition.

As Russ becomes acclimated to our community, please be sure to reach out and welcome him, as he works together with his team to redevelop our business office so that it can best support the mission of our school: the education of our children. On another note, listen to WBUR this week from 6am - 10am to hear our newest advertisement as we work to get our school's name out in the Greater Boston community.

As always, please do not hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

Kol tuv,

Business Office Update

Kehillah Schechter Academy

November 14, 2011

Dear Kehillah Schechter Academy Parents,

I am writing to let you know that Irv Dunn will no longer serve our school as its Director of Finance.

As many of you know, Irv devoted extraordinary hours to his work at KSA, treated everyone warmly and with great respect, maintained respectful and constructive relationships with families, and gave our school so much. Irv has always been available and willing to help anyone who needed it, and he often graciously offered his assistance  before he was even asked.

Together, we have a responsibility to work to make KSA as strong as it can be. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk with me.

I know you join me in wishing Irv much success in all his future endeavors.

MESSAGE FROM MR. MEDWED

Marc Picture 2011Dear Parents,

Another wonderful week at KSA!  Our fourth graders, led by their teachers Sharon and Marilyn, created a meaningful assembly for our school for Veteran's Day which showcased so much of what gives us pride in our school, our students, and our country!

By the time you read this, most of you will have completed your fall parent-teacher conferences and will no doubt be thinking about all that you talked about with your child(ren)'s teachers.

Conference evenings and days are intense for us as educators and in many ways are much more tiring by the end of the process than a regular school day!  However, we relish these opportunities to meet with each of you, to talk, to listen and to think together about our children, our most precious possessions.  While these formal opportunities are important for communicating and understanding in greater detail all that is going on, I want to encourage everyone to use this opportunity as a springboard to more communication.  Teaching and learning is a 24/7 endeavor and requires a team approach in order for it to be most successful, as when our kids experience the same expectations, hear the same language and see the same behaviors both in and out of school, they are more likely to take ownership of them and to make them their own.

The best education for our students is a partnership--a joint effort from the school, the home, the shul, the camp, and the kehillah, the community.  Together, we can shape the next generation of wonderful people.

Thanks for entrusting your children to us and thanks for being our partner in this holy and awesome endeavor.

Shabbat Shalom!
